How to Take Care of the Stroke-affected

MANAGEMENT OF STROKE-

  • Initial Medical Treatment may be followed by Yoga Therapy & Exercises
  • Encourage the patient to be Independent, by Walking, and Self-care
  • Any underlying disease such as Diabetes, Hypertension need special Attention
  • Regular Counseling is advised for relieving Anxiety & Depression
  • Use of Wheelchair, Splint or Sling is to be adopted as per requirement
  • Set immediate goal & long term goal based on the diagnosis, involvement of extremities and cooperation of the patient
  • Towards the side of the affected extremities, it is recommended to turn the head & look around while walking
  • Objects & requirements are to be placed on the normal side
  • People should take care to talk from the normal side
  • Encourage to roll in bed and change positions
  • Begin with balance training with support and then venture outside with therapist support
  • Affected extremities need joint mobility and muscle stretching practices
  • Involve Active, Passive, and Assisted practices such as Suksma vyayama & Breathing exercises
  • In the case of Speech problems, make use of Communication Chart
  • Urinary bladder training for Incontinence might require blocking the urinary catheter with forceps, to be released at regular intervals and empty at fixed timings
  • Owing to constant pressure & resultant bedsores, the lower back, heels, and the occipital area require daily inspection
  • Administer gentle massage & regular turning in bed along with the use of soft bed
  • Ensure regular ankle exercise to help prevent deep vein thrombosis

YOGA TECHNIQUES-

RANGE OF MOTION-

  • All joints, extremities, & spine are to be moved in the full range of motion at least three times a day
  • Encourage Active, Passive, and Active-Passive Movements to prevent contractures
  • Regular Suksmavyayama, Sitalikarana, & Saktivikasaka exercises relieve Rigidity of muscles making them stronger

SITTING & STANDING BALANCE TRAINING

  • Correction of Posture with or without Support
  • Encourage to Write Big letters
  • Inculcate Hand activities to help reduce Rest Tremors
  • Introduce Ambulation training to develop Safe Gait

BREATHING EXERCISES

  • Abdominal, Thoracic, & Clavicular breathing for maintaining Chest Wall Flexibility & for enabling Expansion to Maximum
  • Take up the practice of Balloon blowing & Speaking loud to improve Lung capacity & Speech

RELAXATION TECHNIQUES

  • Help reduce Rigidity
  • Provide Counselling to build Confidence
